101 Cool Places And Things In Ohio (Part III 21-30)

I have posted a month's worth of cool places and things in Ohio using #101CoolPlacesAndThingsInOhio. These posts have included Ohio attractions that have made World and National best lists, places off the beaten path and exceptional Ohio brands. I have 71 days of posts left to go. This is where I plan to slow it down. I have posted a good portion of my favorite places and things in Ohio, but now I need to do some more exploring. On this post you will find the third group of ten attractions from my list and I will be adding to my list throughout the rest of the year. Feel free to help me with suggestions to complete the list. Leave your favorite Ohio attractions in my comments and they may just make my list. To the Ohio tourist, whether you are visiting from out of state or a resident exploring your home state, there is so much to do in Ohio. Use my list to start your Ohio adventure. 21. Hartman Rock Garden

This is my favorite garden and one of my all time favorite places. After Ben Hartman was laid off during the Great Depression he created the rock garden using hundreds of thousands of stones. The folk art creation is opened 365 days of the year and is free to the public. Donations are always welcomed. The garden is the most beautiful from Memorial Day to Labor Day when flowers are at full bloom. Follow their facebook page to learn about volunteer opportunities like helping plant this year's flowers in the garden.

22. African Safari Wildlife Park

We have some interesting drive-thrus in Ohio. One of them is the drive-thru safari at African Safari Wildlife Park. You can feed animals like zebras, bison, camels and kudu all from the comfort of your car. It is a cool experience if you don't mind the car getting a little dirty or having animals literally sticking their heads into your car. Animal lovers will enjoy it, I know I did. You can also watch pigs race and interact with other animals and staff through educational shows.

 
23. Franklin Park Conservatory & Botanical Gardens

We have more than a few attractions on best lists in Ohio and a handful of them are in Columbus. One of those places is Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. It was voted one of the best botanical gardens in the US by the Travel Channel along with botanical gardens in DC, New York and San Francisco. It features over 400 species of plant life and includes botanical environments such as a rainforest and desert. There are new exhibits quarterly but my favorite is the annual spring/summer exhibit, Blooms and Butterflies.

 


24. The Depot Rail Museum

The museum is unknown to many because it is used mostly as an event venue. However, I am told that they will open for large tour groups if you call to make a reservation. I was given a private tour by a a friend of the owner a few years ago and fell in love with car 100. It was built in 1886 for the Ringling Bros. The rail car is gorgeous! It has cherry wood interior, antique Victorian style furniture and plenty of props and photos from the early circus life of the well known entertainment brand. The museum is a cool place to learn about rail road history or book your birthday party, wedding or work event.

25. Cedar Point

Most people who love roller coasters will tell you that their favorite amusement park is Cedar Point. It is another Ohio attraction ranked highly by the Travel Channel. It doesn't get any better than number 1. This place has the ability to turn adults into screaming children. It is a roller coaster enthusiast's dream, the Disney World for adults. New this year is the Rougarou, a floorless roller-coaster that dives down 137 feet and goes 60mph as your legs dangle. Opening weekend is just weeks away, May 9-10.

 
26. Ye Olde Mill (Home Of Velvet Ice Cream)

As you can tell, I love ice cream since this is my third ice cream feature. Velvet's Ye Old Mill makes the cut because they offer a full experience. They have been serving ice cream from this historic mill since the 70s. They provide free tours during the week. There is a small museum on site that covers the history of the mill from it's original use in 1817. There is also information about the history of ice cream and the Velvet brand from it's beginning in the early 1900s. They throw an annual Ice Cream Festival at the end of spring. This year's dates are 5/23-5/25.

27.Columbus Zoo & Aquarium

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium frequently makes the top ten list of zoos in America. It was voted number 1 zoo by The USA Travel Guide recently. It is also the headquarters of Jack Hanna. It is home to 10,000 animals and 575 species. The recently added Heart of Africa exhibit offers patrons a chance to feed giraffes, take a ride on a camel and watch cheetahs and lions.

Another museum on a best list is COSI. It was ranked 10 of the top science museums by the Huffington Post. It is a great place to workout the brain with thought provoking and interactive exhibits.  I am excited that the planetarium is back! There are always new exhibits quarterly. I look forward to checking out 'Top Secret' a new spy inspired exhibit. There are also always cool movies showing in the National Geographic Giant Screen Theater.

29. Ohio State Buckeyes

I don't need to say much about why the Ohio State Buckeyes made my list, so I will keep it short and sweet. History was made when the football team against all odds, won the first National Championship. They also have the best band in the land. This will be a hot ticket this coming football season.

30. The Honda Indy 200 At Mid Ohio

If you are a fan of car racing, this may interest you. In Lexington, Ohio, Honda hosts the annual Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. This summer will be the 31st Verizon Indy Car Series. Past winners have been Andretti, Castroneves and Unser. Patrons can camp out on the grounds. If you get tired of watching the cars race, you can find activities at the Indy Car Fan Zone. Sponsors give away free items. There are autograph sessions and driver Q&As. The year I went, I missed my opportunity to meet Patrick Dempsey, race car driver and (McDreamy aka Dr. Derek Shepherd of Grey's Anatomy). I am still pouting.

101 Cool Places And Things In Ohio (Part I 1-10)

This is a great place to learn about aviation history! Over 300 planes! The museum includes exhibits for World War II,the Korean War and a Presidential Gallery. Free Admission! 

2. The Golden Lamb

Operating since 1803, this is the oldest continuously operating business in Ohio. The Golden Lamb is a hotel and restaurant that has been a stop for many well known people including twelve United States presidents such as both Harrisons, John Quincy Adams, Grant, Garfield, Regan and George W. Bush. Other famous guests included literary greats Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. Stop in for a fabulous brunch or stay the night in a room where a president once rested. The place is pretty much a functioning museum, so take a look around. The rooms that aren't occupied are open for viewing.

3. Hocking Hills State Park

This is no doubt one of the most beautiful places to hike in the U.S. Some people believe it should be added to the Wonders of the World. The park is filled with caves, gorges and waterfalls. There is no shortage of recreational activities to try.If you want to do more than hike, you can participate in ziplining, canoeing, horse back riding and so much more. Stay the night in a cabin, lodge, B&B or camp out on the grounds in the area.

4. The Longaberger Company

Most people have no idea that The Longaberger Company is located in Central Ohio. The Corporate Office building is a giant version of their classic basket located in Newark, Ohio. They welcome visitors inside the building to look around. Less than twenty minutes away, is the Longaberger Homestead. The Homestead is a great place to find deals on merchandise. You can also create your own basket, eat at one of three restaurants and explore the beautiful grounds.

5.Piatt Castles

These two castles were built by brothers Donn and Abram for their families in the 1800s. The second castle built was Mac-O-Cheek; it was lived in as late as the 1980s. Both castles are beautiful and filled with cool antiques. The history of this family is interesting. You can find their story throughout the homes with descriptions and photos. See my 'West Liberty Travel Guide' for details and tips for this attraction.

6.Ohio Caverns

Under a thirty-five acre park is the largest stretch of caverns in Ohio. There are two miles of passageways. The oldest crystal is 250,000 years old. The caverns also house one of the largest stalactites in any cave. For more details and tips about this attraction, check out my previous post 'West Liberty Travel Guide'.

7. Ohio Amish Country
Holmes,Tuscarawas & Wayne Counties 

Of all fifty states, Ohio has the largest community of Amish residents. When you visit the area, you are stepping into a different way of living. Experience the culture through their food at their restaurants, cheese houses and bakeries. For couples their are plenty of B&Bs and wineries in the area. For families there are petting zoos, horse and buggy rides and Amish farms where you can spend the entire day learning about the culture with Amish families. The Art Deco train station houses three museums: The Cincinnati History Museum, The Ohio Museum of Natural History and The Duke Energy Children's Museum. There is an Omnimax theater that has three movie options playing daily. There are also free guided tours of the Union Terminal.

9. Early Television Museum

The museum was founded by Steve McVoy, whose interest in televisions started when he worked at a television repair shop as a teen. Later in his life he began collecting early television receivers. As a result of a lack of storage for his collection, the museum was founded. The museum covers television from the 1920s through the first color television of the 1950s. 

10. Columbus Food Adventures

There are food tours all over the United States but I have yet to come across a company that offers as many options as Columbus Food Adventures(CFA). Part of it has to do with the culinary diversity of Columbus and part of it is the creative thinking of Bethia Woolf.  They offer eleven different tours and a sister company that offers brew tours. Take your pick of  tours in trendy areas like: Short North, Grandview and German Village. There are also specialty tours for people who love dessert, coffee, breakfast, brunch or meat.

An Ohio Day Trip! West Liberty Travel Guide

When people say "there is nothing to do in Ohio," I am immediately annoyed. That translates to "I have not attempted to explore Ohio."  With it being officially spring, I started posting some of my favorite places in Ohio on instagram using '#101CoolPlacesAndThingsInOhio'. Follow me @krisofohio for those posts. I have been seeing a lot of Ohio tourism posts on my social media feeds lately. It is exciting that people are interested in traveling in their own back yards. Ohio is beautiful and if you live here, it is a good thing to know what it has to offer. A post about Ohio Castles that I saw last week gave me the idea for this post. It is a 2012 'Flash Back Road Trip' for me but it will be a great place for those who want to explore lesser known Ohio.

A DAY IN WEST LIBERTY

If you are wanting to explore Ohio, West Liberty is a great place to start. It is rich with interesting historical places. I have been a couple times in the last three years and I think I have created a great itinerary that would satisfy the history buffs, castle lovers, foodies and avid road trippers. There is really something everyone can appreciate.  It can all be done in a day depending on your starting point, how early you start and how committed you are to doing it. It is kind of a long day, but so worth it.

Tips before you start: Pack breakfast for the road or pick something up on the way.

 Stop 1: Ohio Caverns

 The Ohio Caverns open to the public at 9AM. So if you get there sometime within that first hour, you will have a great start on your day. You will need time to figure out what kind of tour you want to take. I really enjoyed the 'Natural Wonder Tour'. It is a guided 1 mile tour 100 feet underground, so sneakers are very necessary. I would also suggest a hoodie or some kind of rain jacket to protect yourself from dripping water. It is 54 degrees inside and with the moisture in the air it seems a little cooler. The caves house crystals as old as 250,000 years, so no touching is permitted. Touching the crystals leaves them discolored from the natural oils that we carry on our skin. The tour will take about an hour.

April 1 - October 31 (Summer Hours): 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
November 1 - March 31 (Winter Hours): 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

2015 Rates range from $12-$29 for adults 
 $9-$15 for children ages 5-12

Tips before you start: If you plan to see both castles; buy the combination castle ticket which allows you to visit both castles at a bundled discounted price.

I suggest seeing Mac-O-Chee first because it is the oldest castle of the two. Seeing the castles in order gives you the Piatt's story in chronological order. The tour is self guided, so you have to read the information that is present and look at the photos. There are a couple of rooms where there are interactive activities. This takes some time depending on how fast or how much you chose to read.

Stop 3:Piatt Castles

 Mac-O-Cheek takes less time to walk through. The castle is smaller and less of the property is open to the public for touring. The inside seems more modern in comparison to Mac-O-Chee. The family lived in the castle as late as the 80's. The library is absolutely beautiful. It is my favorite area of the home. Don't forget to check out the small gift shop at the entrance.

Enjoy a late lunch at Liberty Gathering Place. It is a country style restaurant with a menu covered with comfort foods like smoked pork chops, a pork tenderloin sandwich, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and cream pies. You know it's good when the locals are regulars. Those who love prime rib are in for a real treat. I have had a lot of prime rib and this place is in my top three in taste. I also fell in love with the beets at their salad bar. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious.  There is something on the menu for everyone.

The last stop is a sweet one, literally. If you saved room for dessert, make sure to sample some of Marie's chocolates. Every time I have been there, they have had someone circulating samples through the store. You can also request samples of candy that you are interested in before you make a purchase. For most items there is a selection of dark, milk or white chocolate if you have a particular preference. My favorite treat from Marie's is the dark chocolate covered potato chips. Once you start tasting, you will not leave empty handed.


Hours: 8am-6pm Monday-Saturday

West Liberty is absolutely one of my favorite places in Ohio. Though you can see most of it in a day, the gems of this city make quite the impression. If you are traveling Ohio, make sure you add West Liberty to your to do list.

Hello 2015!

I had an incredible 2014! I started this blog. I went to quite a few concerts. I saw Cher, Cyndi Lauper, K Michelle, 2 Chainz ,Beyonce, Jay-Z, Earth Wind & Fire and Aretha Franklin. I was introduced to a group called Foreign Exchange, when a friend invited me to their concert last spring. I realize my list is an odd combination of artists but I love music. I spent the summer exploring Columbus with my eleven year old nephew. We treated our city as if we were tourists and visited the normal places like COSI and the statehouse and not so known places like Krema Nut Company. I tried some new things like canoeing. I discovered the North American Pawpaw and tasted pawpaw dishes at the Ohio Pawpaw Festival. I introduced my sister to Ohio Amish Country.  Then I returned to Amish Country in December for The Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns. I traveled to several Ohio cities that I had not been like Portsmouth, Frazeysburg and Kingston. I got a free Columbus Food Aventures tour which I used to have Breakfast with Nick, one of my favorite local bloggers. I participated in a Room Escape Adventure where I was locked in a room with a zombie with just an hour to escape. My group made it out with just under two minutes to spare.  I saw the Lion King Broadway Musical and the Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson show. I learned how to make pumpkin pie, paella and New York style black and white cookies. It was a busy year, I can't even name all the shows I saw, new restaurants or recipes I tried, things I did and places I visited.

I hope to do so much more in this year. I want to facilitate the expansion of my business and travel more. I want to organize my closet and the rest of my life. I want to also inspire you and the people around me. I know I am one blogger in a sea of more established bloggers so thank you for your time and interests. Thank you for being a part of my journey!

My Cure To Boredom List From the Rearview (Spring/Summer 2014)

In The Rearview

In the beginning of the season I created an 'adventure to do list'. It is a way to get me to focus and plan things that will keep me from ever feeling like I am bored. It also holds me accountable for my own personal growth and happiness by planning intentional activities. It was something that I learned a while ago without realizing what it was exactly. I just recently read something about this in a blog my partner Christina did. Then I saw a documentary called 'Happy' that talked about intentional activities on WOSU TV. It made me proud to know I have been on the right track for some time now. The last thing I knew I would be doing was posting an update of what I actually got accomplished on my list. Again, accountability! So here goes a recap of  what I got to experience. I left the ones I did not accomplish in red and will update them in this post in the future. Seven out of ten is still pretty good.

1.  Go Canoeing (In spite of me not knowing how to swim.)

This was the first thing I knew I needed to do. For two years I have been saying I would go canoeing and before I knew it, it was winter and I'd missed my opportunity. So I made sure to include the activity on my list. It was also something that was a little scary to me and I believe in doing the things that scare you. I was a little nervous the Sunday I decided to go canoeing. I strapped on my life jacket and once I got in the canoe, I had a blast. I am not great at it, I ran into a few logs but at the end, I understood how to correct my mistakes and was steering the canoe. Check!

2.  Use my Picnic Basket 

I used my picnic basket once this season when I spent the day with my nephew at Slate Run Farm. I did not take any photos. I hope that I can use the basket at least once more before it gets cold and plenty more next summer.
 

3.  Go on the Short North Columbus Food Adventures Tour

My sister came on the dessert tour with me last year for my birthday and expressed interest in the Short North Tour. I decided to treat her to the Short North food tour in August for her birthday. The tour, which is generally on Saturdays was also offered Fridays this summer. We spent the Friday after her birthday restaurant hopping with the tour guide through the Short North which started at The North Market and ended at Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream. I love these tours because it gives you an opportunity to check out restaurants without investing a lot of money on a meal you may not enjoy; though I have never had that problem with the Short North or Columbus Food Adventures. Now that I have crossed this tour off my to do list, they just added two more tours I have to checkout, the Grandview Tour and the Breakfast Tour.

4.  Take a ride on the Valley Gem Sternwheeler in Marietta

I will add it to my list next year.

5.  Visit downtown Yellow Springs
  
I'd visited Yellow Springs a few times to go to Young's Jersey Dairy and that was the only place I'd seen in the city. I decided I would make an effort to visit the downtown area after hearing so many good things about it. I enjoyed all of the public art and the little shops. There trees are decorated and you will see a few barefoot people if the weather is nice. The smell of frankincense and marijuana is also very prevalent through the streets. Well, at least it was the day I was there.

6.  See Beyoncé & Jay Z on their On the Run Tour  Cincinatti 6/28

Like many other people, I was at the baseball stadium in Cincinnati rocking to Bey and Jay on June 28th. My long time friend and I drove to Cincy for an overnight to have an epic experience. This was one of the best concerts I have seen and I would have gone to another city to see it again if I had the time. Loved it! Check!

7.  Take a nature walk at least once a month in Ohio's many parks

I wanted to make this a goal so that I would be more active. While I did not complete the goal, I did try very hard. I started strong in May with two nature walks. I did a nature walk in June, July and August. September I did nothing. I could have checked it off but I won't lie to myself. While I was on my best behavior, I took some photos I love. I will share them even if I did not satisfy the goal.

9.  Check five restaurants off my 'Eating Your Way Across Ohio' book

I was really excited about this book when I got it. I love to travel and I love to eat. The book is a great way to do both. When I got the book, I'd already visited 7  restaurants featured. I checked out two restaurants over the winter. As spring started to approach, I made it my mission to check out five more before fall.  I did complete the goal and that brought me to two cities I'd never been to. The goal also brought me back to check out a few restaurants in cities I have frequented but not had the chance to dine until recently.  My favorite meals were at the Old Canal Smoke House and Dock's Beach House, so you will find them among the three food photos I posted.  Don't be surprised  to see this in my next couple lists in the future.

10. Go to a Columbus Clippers Game

Huntington Park has been opened a while now and every year since, I have been saying I will go to a game. Finally I made it there. It almost did not happen.  That day it seemed as if the clouds would open and drench us. My hair was frizzing up from the moisture in the air. It was date night , so we said what the heck. While standing in line we were given free tickets from two women who got them free from work. It was meant to be. I had a great time, great hotdog and the weather held up.  I look forward to going to more games next season.

Huntington Park Baseball Stadium

It is a new season so I am creating my list for Fall/Winter 2014-2015. The lists make a big difference in helping me do the things I really want to do. I doubt I would have done what I did this summer without my spring/summer list.  If there are things that you have been wanting to do for a while now, you should create your own list. It can be a seasonal list, monthly list or a list for the year.  Let me know what you think I should add to my winter list. I would also love to hear what you have on your list.
